The Energy of Setting & Photoshoot Locations
Every photoshoot begins with a story — and every story deserves the right setting.
Whether it’s sunlight streaming through your living room window, fog curling over the Blue Ridge Mountains, or murals glowing in the heart of downtown Asheville, the place you choose holds energy. Photoshoot Locations shape how you feel, move, and show up.
As an Asheville portrait photographer, I see each location as part of the portrait’s soul — a mirror for the archetype that’s wanting to be seen.
Here are my favorite kinds of spaces to shoot in — and how each one calls forth a different version of you.
🌿 1. Outdoor Sessions: The Wild Mirror
Best for: The Healer, The Queen, The Witch, The Warrioress
The natural world reflects us back in ways no studio can. Whether we’re standing in a mossy forest, beside a waterfall, or on a mountaintop, nature helps you remember who you are when you’re not trying to be anything else.
Mountains & Meadows — Expansion and Freedom
The Blue Ridge Mountains stretch like an exhale. From Craggy Pinnacle to Max Patch to Black Balsam Knob, these are ideal for anyone stepping into sovereignty or celebrating new horizons.

The Golden Hour (1-2 hrs before sundown or after sunrise) is the preferred time to capture this on a sunny day to create those beautiful warm tones and reduce contrasty shadows on the face. On an overcast day, we can use these locations mid-day.
Forests — Stillness and Wisdom
The woods around Bent Creek or the Arboretum create a cocoon of green quiet — perfect for grounding and introspective archetypes.

The smell of the earth embraces you bringing you deep into a grounded embodiment of your primal nature.
Waterways — Emotion and Surrender
Water is the language of emotion and flow. Waterfall sessions in DuPont State Forest or riverbank shoots near North Mills River capture movement, sensuality, and release.

Jeanie chose a waterfall that carried sentimental meaning to her for her shoot which allowed her to feel safe and sacred in her experience.
Pro tip: Bring clothing that can move — fabrics that flow or catch the wind add soul to every frame.

🕯️ 2. In-Home Sessions: The Sacred Interior
Best for: The Mother, The Muse, The Healer, The Lover
There’s a quiet kind of power in choosing your own home as your portrait setting.
It’s the place where you’ve laughed, cried, rested, created — where your real life unfolds.
When photographed with intention, it becomes sacred space.
The Living Room — Everyday Magic
Soft morning light spilling across your couch, a cup of tea in hand, your favorite book on the table — these moments tell a story of presence.
The Bedroom — Intimacy and Surrender
Not sexual, but soulful. The bedroom holds vulnerability and truth. A barefoot, linen-draped portrait session can feel like meeting yourself before the world does.
Your Studio or Workspace — Creative Identity
Your art, your altar, your laptop, your plants — these items are your symbols. Photographing you within them captures the archetype of The Creator, The Visionary, or The Alchemist.
"For Jamie, we photographed in her home office and living room surrounded by sacred belongings, her pup, and the pile of laundry in the next room. This led to the powerful realization that the Priestess she was embodying could be a part of her everyday life. The epic and the mundane can exist together — this realization in itself mid-shoot was a huge piece transformational of her puzzle.”
Why it matters: Shooting in your home removes performance. You’re already safe there — and safety lets authenticity bloom.

🌆 3. Urban Asheville: Expression and Edge
Best for: The Rebel, The Creator, The Alchemist, The Modern Muse
Sometimes the archetype wants to be loud. To play with color, texture, and grit. That’s when we head downtown.
The River Arts District offers weathered brick, bold murals, and creative energy. Wall Street and Pack Square give architectural drama, reflections, and motion.
Urban sessions are fantastic for entrepreneurs, artists, or anyone claiming visibility and voice. They say, I’m here. I’m not hiding anymore.
I adore the textural elements and dramatic lighting of Wall Streets Cobblestone Alley and the Artsy Grunge vibes of the River Arts is the epitome of Asheville Creativity.
Photography tip: Morning or sunset light bounces beautifully off concrete and glass, giving your portraits a cinematic edge.
✨ How to Choose the Right Setting for Your Archetype
When you book an Archetype Portrait Journey, we choose the location together — guided by intuition, meaning, and the energy you’re ready to embody.
Ask yourself:
Do I feel more myself surrounded by trees or by my favorite things at home?
Does my archetype crave movement and air, or stillness and sanctuary?
What space would feel like freedom to me?
You might be surprised by what your body answers.
Logistics & Tips
Permits & Access: Most of the stunning outdoor locations around Asheville — including the Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah Forest — welcome portrait photography without permits, as long as we’re traveling light. I shoot using natural light and minimal gear to honor the landscape and its rhythms.
I have passes to the NC Arboretum we can utilize year-round and the Asheville Botanical Garden is also open to portrait sessions.
Timing: When we choose a public trail, it's best to go on a mid-week day so the experience is as private as possible, especially during tourist season (Apr-Nov)
Lighting: Natural light works beautifully both outdoors and indoors — we’ll plan around it.
Seasonal Notes: Spring brings wildflowers; autumn brings gold. In-home shoots glow beautifully year-round.
Comfort: The more relaxed you feel, the more magnetic your images will be.
Conclusion: The Place That Holds You
Every location — mountain, bedroom, or mural — carries its own frequency. The real magic happens when we match it to yours.
Whether you’re craving the wild wind, the comfort of your own space, or the pulse of the city, there’s a place that will hold your story perfectly.
